Scripture for Life - Let God Change You!

The scripture theme this week is on letting Christ change you by making Him the center of your life!

Acts 3: 1-10
"One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer - at three in the afternoon.  Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.  When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.  Peter looked straight at him, as did John.  Then Peter said, "Look at us!"  So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.  Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you.  In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."  Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong.  He jumped to his feet and began to walk.  Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.  When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him."

Almighty God, the Creator of the universe, wants a relationship with you!  He is ready and waiting for each of us to accept His love, and to be transformed by Him!

Scripture for Life - Purpose

As you enter into the summer, and perhaps have some time on your hands, you might find yourself wondering what to do.  Whenever you have some time it's always appropriate to communicate with God and remember that it's Him that gives your life purpose.

One Scripture verse for this is Ephesians 1:11
"It is in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for."

Scripture for Life - Honesty

The Scripture theme for this week is Honesty.

Here's a Bible verse that's worth committing to memory:
Proverbs 11:3
"Good people will be guided by honesty"

This is also the Scripture Memory Verse for the week.

Scripture for Life - Embrace Change

Continuing the theme for the week of embracing change, here's another scripture on the subject and how we are to continually turn to God in times of change.
Psalm 31:14-15
"I trust in you, O Lord; I say, "You are my God." My times are in your hand."

Can you think of a time when you were pending change in your life that made you nervous or uncomfortable?  What are some examples of those times in life when turning to God can put us at ease?

Scripture Memory Verse; Week 7; Ecclesiastes 3:1

The Scripture verse for this week is appropriate considering the change coming from the school year into summer.  Remember that God, who invented everything, made seasons of change a part of our lives.

Ecclesiastes 3:1
"For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven."

Scripture for Life - God's Word

Today's scripture verse is about the power of God's word, how it will break through all barriers, nothing can hold it back!

Isaiah 55:11
"So is my word that goes out from my mouth:  It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

Question:  Have you ever experienced the power of God's word, have you witnessed it perform something in your life?

Scripture Memory Verse; Week 6; Mark 1:17

The Scripture Memory Verse this week is very similar to last week...

"Come, follow me" Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

Scripture for Life - Obey God!

The scripture verse for today is:

"He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."

Here's a video that makes the point well.  For points, please post any comments you have...

Following Jesus - Not Chasing the World!

I wanted to post a video for you today that I think makes a good point.  It's something that I've struggled with over the years and I think if we're all honest, everyone has at one point or another.  I'm talking about surrendering to Jesus completely and focusing on the things of God instead of the things of the world.  That is to say that we don't chase worldly things and happiness but instead keep our focus on Christ and receive the peace and joy that only He can provide.

A scripture verse for this is: 1 John 2: 15-17
"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever."

Here's a video that I think makes the point very well.  As you watch the video, please consider the squirrel (who's name is actually Scrat) as representing us.  The acorn - well, that represents the things of the world.   Maybe you'll see an analogy of how we spend all of our time running around chasing the things of the world, never really catching or obtaining them, and always getting ourselves into tight-spots in the process!

Scripture Verse for the Week; John 13:34

The Scripture verse for the week is:  John 13:34

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

Scripture for Life - He is Risen!

After Easter we can celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  The gift that God has given to humanity through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ is almost too much to comprehend, some see it as beyond belief!

Today's Scripture is the story of doubting Thomas, from John 20: 24-25
"Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."

Here is a video that serves to make the point as well.

For points, please post a comment and share your thoughts on what the Gift of Salvation means to you!

Scripture for Life - The Easter Story

Today's scripture verse is from one of the major sections of the Bible that tells the Easter story.

Luke 24: 1-12
"(1) But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. (2) And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, (3) but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. (4) While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. (5) And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? (6) He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, (7) that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” (8) And they remembered his words, (9) and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. (10) Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, (11) but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. (12) But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened."

For points, please post a comment that you've considered today's verse and the impact, on everything in the world, of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross for each and every one of us.

I would also ask that you watch the video below. It's a message presented by Pastor Louie Giglio of Passion City Church in Atlanta, GA.  He's talking about the centrality of Jesus, and the Cross, to everything!

Scripture for Life - Christ Lives!

This being Easter week, the scripture verses for the week will focus on the glorious event of Christ's ultimate triumph, the most important event in human history!

The Scripture verse for today is from the book of Matthew, this is where the Resurrection of Christ was foretold by Jesus himself.

Matthew 20: 18-19
"(18) We are going to Jerusaelm, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.  They will condemn him to death (19) and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.  On the third day he will be raised to life! "

For points, please post a comment, have you ever considered that there is no other event in human history that is more important or has more impact on humanity than the Resurrection of Christ!

Scripture for Life - God's Identity!

The scripture verse today points to God's identity.

It's human nature to look to God for help in times of need, that's perfectly normal.  But along the way, there is a tendency to look at God as kind of a cosmic vending machine, that we only go to in times of need to get what we want.  It's easy to see how some people could fall into the habit of think that our good deeds and living right are our way of "earning" currency with God that we can then cash-in when we have a need.  That's not what God wants from us.

We should put our Faith in God's Identity, not on his activity.  In other words, we should look at God as the Lord of all, and focus on his identity as God, not on what He can do for us!

Today's Scripture Verse is Revelations 1:8
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

This verse is also the Memory verse for the week.

Here's a video that talks about who God is in Christ Jesus:

Palm Sunday; Matthew 21:1-11

This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday, the day when we as Christians celebrate the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in exactly the manner it had been foretold by scripture.  This occurred the week before his death and resurrection, which is what we celebrate at Easter.  Palm Sunday is sometimes called "Passion Sunday," it marks the beginning of Holy Week which concludes on Easter.

The Scripture verse that chronicles this event is Matthew 21: 1-11

"When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. "If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, 'BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY, EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.' "The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats. Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!" When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, "Who is this?"  And the crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee."

Below is a short video depiction of the event, for points, please post a comment that you read the post and watched the video, along with any questions or comments you might have.

Scripture for Life - Integrity III (Keep it Real)

Thanks for your notes and comments about our vacation, we are having a great time!

Here's another post for the week on the subject of "Keeping it Real/Integrity"; the scripture verse for today:
Proverbs 11:3
"The Integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them."

For points, you can post a comment and share if you've ever known anyone who tried to live a lie or get away with something but was found out?

Scripture for Life - Integrity II

Hello from Florida!  As you know, we are on vacation here in St. Petersburg, having a great time!  It's a lot warmer her, it got up to 91 today!

Here's another post for you, on the issue of keeping it real, which is really another way of saying - maintaining integrity.

The common definition for Integrity is:  adherence to moral and ethical principles - that's from the dictionary.

A simple way of saying it would be; "To do the right thing, all the time, even when no one is looking and you have no worry of being found out."

The scripture verse for today echo's that description;
Proverbs 10:9
"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out."

For points, please post a comment - can you recall a time when you did the right thing, even if it cost you more or caused you inconvenience, even if you could have gotten away with taking a sort-cut?

Scripture for Life - Being Real

The topic of the week is; Being Real

This means that you never settle for anything less than the real You - just as God created you.  In other words, never try to be anything that you're not.

The Scripture verse for Today is the same as the Memory Verse for the week (posted below);
Ephesians 2:10
"We are God's workmanship, created in CHrist Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

For points - say a prayer to Thank God for making you in His image, and just the way you are, and ask Him to show you anything he has for you to do.  You have unique gifts and abilities from God, ask Him how He wants you to use them!
Post a comment after you've done this prayer, you can share anything God placed on your heart while you were praying, or, just let us know that you took the time to pray - whatever you're comfortable posting.

Scripture for Life - Balance III

More on the topic of Balance, the scripture verse for today is:

Proverbs 4:25-27
"Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all side-show distractions.  Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you."

My prayer for all of us this week is that we will each be able to control our schedules and manage time to pause and reflect on God.  I believe God intended man to live a slower, more peaceful lifestyle that what is required by modern society.  Do you ever think that life would be better if we were just able to slow down?

Scripture Memory Verse; Week 1; Proverbs 3:6

At our meeting last night we agreed to commit to memorizing one Scripture verse each week.  We'll have a quiz on the verse each week and if you have it memorized, we agreed that you'll receive 3 extra points for the week!

The Scripture Memory Verse this week is:
Proverbs 3:6
"In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."

-Wes

New Weekly Topic - Balance

The topic for this coming week is balance, as in maintaining balance in your life.

From our lesson book:
When life is busy, you have a couple of options. You can over-commit to the point of burnout.  You can get so overwhelmed that you give up and drop out.  Or you can ask God to help you find balance.  A balanced life is a healthy, God-honoring life.  It's the kind of life Jesus lived.  He spent His days teaching, healing, and helping those around Him.  But, Jesus also took time out.  He dined with friends, went to a wedding, and climbed a mountain just to spend time along with His Father.  Want to follow Jesus?  Follow His example by putting firt things first and keeping your priorities clear.

For point, please post a discussion comment on whether you've every felt over-committed and like you were running just to keep up.  Maybe you fell that way now?  What have you done to cope with it before, what are some things you might do now if you're feeling that way?

Scripture for Life - Authority V

This is the final scripture verse in this series on Authority.  Today's verse is:

Matthew 28:18
"Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. "

What do you think life would be like if Jesus were here and exercised authority over everything - as the Bible tells us it will be after his return?

Scripture for Life - Authority

Today's post is the final in our series on Authority.

The verse today is:
Titus 3:1-3
"Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed,2to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.3For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another."

For points, please make a post that you have read this entry and considered it's implications for your life.

Today's posting is a video about submitting to Authority - first to God, then to those God has placed in a position of authority in our lives.

The message in this video is very simple and common, have you ever responded like this?

Scripture for Life - The Authority of God

Pastor Faron's sermon today was about Abram (Abraham) and how he became a blessing to humanity because he obeyed God.

In a similar way, we are all called to submit to the authority of God.

Today's Scripture verse is:

Romans 12:2
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

For points, please post a comment, can you think of any time in your life when you responded to what you believed was the will of God for you?

Scripture for Life - Authority

We're back on the topic of the week - Authority.

The Scripture Verse for today is:
1 Timothy 2:1-2
"I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."

This message is similar to the previous one about chaos.  You can see how it's important to use to pray for those in power - in the government, etc., that they will lead godly lives and make wise decisions that affect us all.

Have you ever prayed for anyone in the government?  It might seem odd, but it's important.

Proclaim the Name of Jesus!

Since it's Friday I thought I'd post a video for you to enjoy today, with the message that we are called to proclaim the name of Jesus to all the world!

The Scripture Verse for today is Romans 10:9
"Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Here's a video of Comedian Steve Harvey doing just that...

The title of the video is "Introducing Jesus"

For Points today - please post a comment about a time when you proclaimed the name of Jesus to someone else.  If you haven't done that yet, can you think of a time when you would have the opportunity to?

Happy Friday,
-Wes

Scripture for Life - Authority

The lesson topic this week is 'Authority'

The Scripture verse for today is:
1 Peter 5:5-6
"Be submissive to those who are older.  All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."  Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up."

This is not a scripture verse that is directed only at youth, this is for all of us.  We are instructed here to respect our elders, and especially God; to submit to His authority.

It could be said that God places some in a position of authority over you in order to bring order out of chaos.

For points, please make a post and explain what this statement means to you - "Without anyone in authority, everything would be chaos."

Scripture for Life - Praying for Others

The topic of discussion this week is Appearance, meaning that we should look on the inside of people instead of what judging them by what we see on the outside.

A related calling that we have with that is to keep others in our prayers, we are to always place others above ourselves - imagine what the world would be like if everyone actually did that!!!

The scripture verse for today is:
Job 42:10
"And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before."

For points, please post a comment and share with us about a time when you prayed for another person.

Scripture for Life - Love

I'm changing the topic around some today, I'd like to focus on how we are called to support and love one another as brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Scripture verse for this today is:

1 John 4:7
"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God"

Does it make sense to you that if God is Love, and we are called to demonstrate the love of God to those around us, then we are called to love those around us?

What does this look like for you?  For points, please post a comment on how we can show love to one another in our everyday lives...

Here's a video on the subject of showing love to each other...

Scripture for Life - Acceptance (Revisited)

With Ash Wednesday yesterday, we are now into the season of Lent.  The posts I made leading up to yesterday's service were to help you learn more about what we are celebrating during this season of the church.

I will switch back and forth betwen topics this week, leading up to our next Group meeting next Wednesday.  As you know, we've got Winter Jam this weekend, and the lock-in at the church that night!

I'm shifting back to the topic of study for next week, of Acceptance.

The scriptue verse for today is:
Proverbs 31:30
"Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised." (NASB)

Another way of saying this would be; "Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.  The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear of God."  (The Message Translation)

What does it mean to you when it says Charm is deceitful, or that it can mislead?  What's another name for charm?

Scripture for LIfe - Ash Wednesday Devotional

Today's scripture verse is:

Joel 2:12-14

"Yet even now, says the Lord,
Return to me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
Rend your hearts and not your clothing.
Return to the Lord, your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love,
and relents from punishing.
Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain-offering and a drink-offering
for the Lord, your God?"

We are at that time of the year when we are invited to test our inner freedom and to question the notion: I can take it, or leave it. Try that with pornography, alcohol, complaining, gossiping, anger, gambling. What habits make me hard to live with?

Lent is about regaining self-control, especially in those areas that damage others. We don't admire those whose appetites or habits lead them by the nose. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me.

For Points; Please post a comment that you've read this devotional.  Are you considering giving something up for Lent?  You don't have to say what it is, if it's personal to you, but we would be interested to know if you're working to grow closer to God during this season so that we may support each other.

In Christ,

-Wes

Ash Wednesday marks the onset of the Lent, the 40-day period of fasting and abstinence. It is also known as the 'Day of Ashes'. So called because on that day at church the faithful have their foreheads marked with ashes in the shape of a cross.

The name 'Day of Ashes' comes from "Dies Cinerum" in the Roman Missal and is found in the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary. The concept originated by the Roman Catholics somewhere in the 6th century. Though the exact origin of the day is not clear, the custom of marking the head with ashes on this Day is said to have originated during the papacy of Gregory the Great (590-604).

In the Old Testament ashes were found to have used for two purposes: as a sign of humility
and mortality; and as a sign of sorrow and repentance for sin. The Christian connotation for ashes in the liturgy of Ash Wednesday has also been taken from this Old Testament biblical custom.  Receiving ashes on the head as a reminder of mortality and a sign of sorrow for sin was a practice of the Anglo-Saxon [English(Echurch in the 10th century. It was made universal throughout the Western church at the Synod of Benevento in 1091.

Originally the use of ashes to betoken penance was a matter of private devotion. Later it became part of the official rite for reconciling public penitents. In this context, ashes on the penitent served as a motive for fellow Christians to pray for the returning sinner and to feel sympathy for him. Still later, the use of ashes passed into its present rite of beginning the penitential season of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

There can be no doubt that the custom of distributing the ashes to all the faithful arose from a devotional imitation of the practice observed in the case of public penitents. But this devotional usage, the reception of a sacramental which is full of the symbolism of penance (cf. the cor contritum quasi cinis of the "Dies Irae") is of earlier date than was formerly supposed. It is mentioned as of general observance for both clerics and faithful in the Synod of Beneventum, 1091 (Mansi, XX, 739), but nearly a hundred years earlier than this the Anglo-Saxon homilist Ælfric assumes that it applies to all classes of men.

Putting a 'cross' mark on the forehead was in imitation of the spiritual mark or seal that is put on a Christian in baptism. This is when the newly born Christian is delivered from slavery to sin and the devil, and made a slave of righteousness and Christ (Rom. 6:3-18).

This can also be held as an adoption of the way 'righteousness' are described in the book of Revelation, where we come to know about the servants of God.The reference to the sealing of the servants of God for their protection in Revelation is an allusion to a parallel passage in Ezekiel, where Ezekiel also sees a sealing of the servants of God for their protection:

"And the LORD said to him [one of the four cherubim], 'Go through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark [literally, "a tav"] upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it.' And to the others he said in my hearing, 'Pass through the city after him, and smite; your eye shall not spare, and you shall show no pity; slay old men outright, young men and maidens, little children and women, but touch no one upon whom is the mark. And begin at my sanctuary.' So they began with the elders who were before the house." (Ezekiel 9:4-6)

Unfortunately, like most modern translations, the one quoted above (the Revised Standard Version, which we have been quoting thus far), is not sufficiently literal. What it actually says is to place a tav on the foreheads of the righteous inhabitants of Jerusalem. Tav is one of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and in ancient script it looked like the Greek letter chi, which happens to be two crossed lines (like an "x") and which happens to be the first letter in the word "Christ" in Greek Christos). The Jewish rabbis commented on the connection between tav and chi and this is undoubtedly the mark Revelation has in mind when the servants of God are sealed in it.

The early Church Fathers seized on this tav-chi-cross-christos connection and expounded it in their homilies, seeing in Ezekiel a prophetic foreshadowing of the sealing of Christians as servants of Christ. It is also part of the background to the Catholic practice of making the sign of the cross, which in the early centuries (as can be documented from the second century on) was practiced by using one's thumb to furrow one's brow with a small sign of the cross, like Catholics do today at the reading of the Gospel during Mass.

Teaching for Life - What is Lent?

As an update to our weekly schedule this week, in observance of Ash Wednesday, we will not have our normal weekly Youth Meeting, we will instead meet with the full church body in the sanctuary.

In order to help prepare us for Lent, and Ash Wednesday, I will use this blog to post information and teaching on the background of these observances.

Today's post is from an informative Devotional prepared by Pastor Faron. If you have any questions or comments, please post them and I will answer them here since it might be of benefit to someone else as well, it could be that someone else has the same question.

For points, please just read the entire posting and them post a comment certifying that you have read it.

In Christ,
Wes
>>><<<

While I would like to be able to tell you to turn in your Bibles to Acts chapter 21 verse 4 to find the beginning of Lent described by Saint Luke, I can not. While there are Biblical events that contributed to its practice, Lent is not in the Bible. Some scholars argue that it is a practice that dates back to the Apostles, but the earliest evidence we have regarding the preparatory fasting before Easter comes from the third century Anno Domini and for the Lenten season as a regularized church practice from the fourth century.

Simply put Lent is a season of penitence, fasting and prayer designed to purify and prepare our hearts to receive the resurrected Christ at Easter. In the early church catechumens, those desiring to be Christians, would go through a preparatory period of instruction and purification that would end with their baptism on Easter morning. While this practice was reserved for new Christians, the church recognized that we all needed to prepare our hearts for Easter and so from early a period of prayer and fasting before Easter was practiced. The traditions of this preparatory fast differed in the eastern and western parts of the church and continue to be different today, just as the Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Easter at a different time than the western church. Since our Protestant tradition is rooted in the Western Church we will focus on that history for our understanding of Lent.

The length of the fast and the extent of the fast varied. Some of the early fasts lasted a few hours, others a few days; the regular practice of the Lenten fast being forty days seems to have been established prior to the Council of Nicea in 313 A.D. Gregory the Great in the sixth century established the modern understanding of Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday and continuing through Holy Saturday. The season is six weeks of six fast days, Monday through Saturday, plus the Wednesday through Saturday of Ash Wednesday week to bring us to a total of forty fasting days. Sundays are considered feast days, as each Sunday is a mini Easter where we celebrate our resurrected Lord. Gregory is also the person who began the tradition of imposing ashes on peoples’ foreheads on Ash Wednesday.

The extent of the Lenten fast was very strict in the beginning, allowing for one meal a day around the three o’clock hour and requiring those fasting to give up meat, dairy, eggs and oil. It was the giving up of eggs and oil that led to the traditions of Christians giving eggs at Easter and of having pancakes on Fat Tuesday. Exactly what people gave up varied by area and over time, but ultimately the strictness was relaxed to the modern practice of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday being the only strict fast days and meat only being given up on Fridays during Lent.

A final modern practice of Lent has been for individuals to give up something of importance to them. The purpose of this practice is the same as a fast, to demonstrate to both oneself and to God that God has a higher priority in our lives than the thing which we give up and to realize that we depend on God to meet our needs. Too often when we feel lonely, angry, or even stressed we turn to things other than God to cope with these feelings. We might eat chocolate, smoke, drink wine or go shopping. When we give up these coping mechanisms or even something that just consumes a lot of our time we soon discover that God is fully capable of meeting our coping needs and that we can fully place our trust in Him.

Lent is a season in the Church Calendar designed for us to prepare our hearts to fully receive the resurrected Christ at Easter. Through Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection God the Father reconciled the whole world to Him restoring a brokenness that has existed from the Garden. As Christians, we must fully trust in this saving act to reconcile our relationships to God. Lent is a time to condition the soil of hearts to receive this truth for the first time or to renew this truth each year as we prepare to receive anew the miracle that is the Resurrected Christ.

This devotional has been written to create a shared journey for us this Lenten season. It will incorporate scripture, teaching, prayer, praise and spiritual discipline challenges so that we might have a shared practice and focus as we prepare our hearts. The focus of our study will be Saint Peter who is perhaps the New Testament person who is in greatest need of God’s grace. His bold heart had to be humbled and transformed so that he could lead the Church in a boldly humble way. He knew faith, fear and failure, but he was always ready to act whether it was stepping out of a boat or telling a lame man to stand. Peter’s encounter with Jesus Christ completely transformed his life and because of that Christ built His Church upon him and all of us stand here today following Christ. May our shared Lenten study transform our hearts in the same way that Peter’s was to enable us to build upon his faith to continue transforming the world.

Scripture for Life - Appearance III

I missed making a post yesterday since I was out of the house all day and went to the Monster Truck rally with Joey last night.  Please accept my apologies, I know some of you were looking for it.

The verse for today is from 1 Timothy 2:10
"Women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do."

While this verse specifically talks about women, it of course applies to both men and women.

Can you think of a good thing you could do that would make you attractive to others, and to God?

The concert is next week!  The headline act this year is the David Crowder Band - here's their latest video...

Scripture for Life - Appearance II

Here's another scripture verse that tells us how God is not concerned with our outward appearance, he's more concerned with what's in our hearts...

Matthew 23:28
"So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness."

Have you ever known a hypocrite, or been one yourself?  A hypocrite is someone who tells you to "do as I say, not as I do."  They tell you do act one way, but they don't do it themselves.  We're all guilty of it from time to time, it's human nature to take the easy way out.  But, can you see how that will (always) lead to problems?

Scripture for Life - Appearance

The lesson subject for this coming week is "Appearance."  No, that doesn't mean that we're going to talk about always looking your best, although that's certainly a good thing to do.

Instead, we're talking about how people normally look at and judge people by how they look.  That's not the case with God, He instead looks at the heart, and judges us on how we show love for Him and for one another, as expressed in the scripture verse for today:

1 Samuel 16:7
"But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him.  For the Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."

For points/comment:  Have you every experienced a time when someone treated you unfairly or inappropriately because they judged you on how you look?  Or, have you ever done that to anyone else?

Below is a video on the subject of accepting people for who they are, it provides a good reminder of what's really important...

Snow Driving - Fail!

You could probably call this a post about Anger; my thinking that most of the folks involved with this driving "incident" experienced some sort of Anger reflex...

Scripture for Life - Anger VI

To close our scripture references for the topic of Anger, let's look one more time at God telling us to avoid Anger.

This scripture is from Psalms 37:8
"Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret - it leads only to evil."

For points, read through all of Psalms Chapter 38.  Post a comment/reply and share the text from the verse out of this chapter that stands out to you, along with any comments you may have on the verse you select.

Scripture for Life - Anger V

Today's scripture is back on the topic of Anger, we'll be discussing Anger at our meeting tomorrow.

Ephesians 4: 26-27
"Go ahead and be angry.  You do well to be angry - gut don't use your anger as fuel for revenge.  And don't stay angry.  Don't go to bed angry.  Don't give the Devil that kind of foot-hold in your life."

For Points:
Complete this sentence:
"Anger is only one letter short of  _______."
What's a new word you can make by adding one letter?

Scripture for Life - Anger IV

There is such a thing as righteous anger. And sometimes we need to talk about problems or deal with dangerous situations - but even/especially at those times, we must exercise self-control! Even so, most of the time, our anger is not righteous.

The Scripture for today is James 1:20
"for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God."

For points, please post a comment; have you ever experienced a situation where "righteous anger" was warranted?

Scripture for Life - Integrity

Today's scripture is on the subject of integrity - otherwise known as doing the right thing when no one is looking and during those times when you don't believe you'd be found out, even if you cheated.  Those with integrity do the right thing - because it's the right thing!  That's how God calls us to live, as described in this scripture verse:

Proverbs 10:9
"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out."

Here's a short story that I think provides a great description of integrity; and you can see how it makes those with integrity stand out from everyone else.

>>>

A successful business man was  growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over  the business.

Instead of choosing one of his  Directors or his children, he decided to do something different.  He called all the young
executives in his company together.

He said, "It is time for me to step down  and choose the next  CEO. I have decided to choose one of  you. "The young executives were Shocked, but the boss  continued. "I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very  special SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come  back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I  have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and  the one I choose will be the next CEO."

One man, named  Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went  home and excitedly, told his
wife the story. She helped him get a pot,  soil and compost and he planted the seed. Everyday, he would water  it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three  weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about  their seeds and the plants that were beginning to  grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing  ever grew.

Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks  went by, still nothing.

By now, others  were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by --  still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his  seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had  nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however,  he just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so  wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and  all the young executives of the company brought their plants  to the CEO for inspection.

Jim told his wife that he  wasn't going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be  honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it  was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life,  but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty  pot to the board room. When Jim arrived,  he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other  executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes.  Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his  colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his  young executives.

Jim just tried to  hide in the back. "My, what great plants, trees and flowers  you have grown," said the CEO. "Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!"

All of a sudden, the CEO  spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He  ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front.  Jim was terrified. He thought, "The CEO knows I'm a failure!  Maybe he will have me fired!"

When Jim got to  the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed -  Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone  to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced  to the young executives, "Behold your next Chief Executive  Officer!

His name is Jim!" Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow his seed.

"How could he be the new CEO?" the others said.

Then the CEO said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in  this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not  possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it.  Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!"

Do you see any similarities between this story and the life we're called to live by God?

Scripture for Life - Anger III

Here's a scripture regarding Anger, but viewing it from the opposite perspective of Joy.

Proverbs 12: 19-21
"Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.  (20) There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace. (21) No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked have their fill of trouble."

For points:
post a comment that includes the text of another verse from Provers 12.  This entire chapter is about joy, righteous living, and avoiding cruelty and anger.

Scripture for Life - Anger II

Here's the second scripture this week on the topic of Anger;

Proverbs 22:  24-25
"Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, (25) Or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared."

For points - post a reply;
Can you recall a time when you were really angry and acting out - usually referred to as throwing a temper tantrum or a fit - when other people began to avoid you and stay away?  Do you like to be around people when they're that way, or, do you know anyone who is that way all the time?  Those kind of people are usually referred to as a hot-head or something like that.  Do you see how it's' not pleasant to be around people like that?  That's what God is telling us through this scripture.

Scripture for Life - Anger I

The topic of study next week is Anger.

I will make various posts this week on that subject.

The first scripture is Psalm 14:29
Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding,
but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.

Scripture for Life - Acceptance IV (Closing thoughts)

I hope you all enjoyed the discussion on Acceptance at group tonight.

Here's a closing scripture on the topic;
Romans 5: 6-8
"(6) You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.  (7) Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.  (8) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:  While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

This scripture tells us that no matter how lonely, out of place or rejected we might feel in the world from time to time, God always accepts us.  This is proven by the ultimate symbol of acceptance, even in our fallen sinful state, Christ died for our sins.

For points, please post a reference to another scripture, any one you like, that tells of God's enduring love for us.

My First Computer

In addition to today's scripture (in the post below) I'm posting this for the "Fun" page, it will archive there.

I thought you might find this interesting, just to put things into perspective for you and how good we have it for communications these days , and how much things change.-

Believe it or not, this was my first computer, I actually had one of these, a "Commodore Vic 20"

The "hard drive" was a cassette tape deck.
The monitor was a 13" black & white tv (yes, they really did exist)
Software?  What's that?  For "Programs" you had to buy a separate book of code and type it in to write the 'program' yourself.

They said you could get the thing to play space invaders - like you see in the pictures - but the code you had to type for that 'program' was about 20 pages long; I could never make it work...

When?  It was about 1980 when I had one.
(hey, that's only 31 years ago!)

This was the hard drive...
I posted this for fun, but also to make a point.

Things change, drastically and quickly, but not with regard to God. He is the same, now, and forever.  The God that we worship today is the same God that spoke to Moses through the burning bush, that told Noah to build an ark, and that sent His Son Jesus as our Lord and Savior to die for our sins - over 2,000 years ago!

Everything we have in this world; everything that we work for day in and day out, that we see on the web and on TV and decide that we must have to be happy - it's all going to fade away in the end.
Not too long from now people will look at pictures of our stuff, like my Commodore Vic 20 here, and wonder what we were thinking.

It's our relationships with each other and with God that will last, that's all we really have.  God calls us to accept each other and to love each other more than we love ourselves - or material things.

Food for thought - what is the most important thing in your life?
What is it that you spend more time thinking about than anything else?
The answer to the second question answers the first!
...God want's it to be Him!

-Wes

Scripture for Life - Acceptance - III

Today's verse is from the book of Romans.

Romans 15: 5-7
"(5)May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, (6)so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  (7)Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God."

For points, please post an answer to this question:
How does accepting one another, as instructed in this scripture verse, bring praise to God?

Scripture for Life - Acceptance...

The weekly lesson we will discuss this Wednesday is on ACCEPTANCE.

Scripture postings this week will focus on that concept leading up to our meeting on Wednesday.

The Scripture for today on this topic is:

Romans 12:9
"Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good."

Scripture for Life - Mercy...

Consider this:
The concept of JUSTICE is directed towards a victim, one who is harmed by an action of another.
Whereas MERCY is for an offender,
The heart of the Lord is Mercy.

We are all guilty sinners in the eyes of God.
But, in his Mercy, by Grace through Christ Jesus, we are reconciled to God and can once again join in a relationship with God.

The scripture for today is Matthew 9:10-13;
"It happened as he sat in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.  11 When the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"  12 When Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.  13 But you go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. "

For points, post a reference to another scripture describing God's Mercy towards us.

If we're lost and simply don't know what to do - scripture tells us to ask God;

Historical Footnote - Grape Juice and the Methodist Church

He's a little-known story of how one devoted Methodist turned a disappointment into a success, working throughout to serve God.

Thomas Bramwell Welch was born in Glastonbury, England. He came to the United States when his father emigrated in 1834. He attended public schools in Watertown, New York.  At age 17, Thomas Welch joined the Wesleyan Methodist Connexion, founded the same year (1843).

From its beginning, the Wesleyan Methodist Connexion strongly opposed (1) the "manufacturing, buying, selling, or using intoxicating liquors", and (2) "slaveholding, buying, or selling" of slaves.

With the first edition of their Discipline, the Wesleyan Methodists expressly required for the Lord's Supper that "unfermented wine only should be used at the sacrament."  This requirement was about 25 years before Welch used pasteurization. So it is clearly evident that pasteurization was not the only method used to prepare it unfermented. There were traditional methods to prepare unfermented wine (juice) for use at any time during the year, e.g. to reconstitute concentrated grape juice, or to boil raisins, or to add preservatives that prevent juice from fermenting and souring.

Throughout his late teens, Welch was active in the Underground Railroad that transported escaped slaves from the south into Canada.  In fact, he was not the only Wesleyan Methodist connected to the "Underground Railroad."

By age 19, he graduated from Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary and became an ordained Wesleyan Methodist minister.  He ministered first in Poundridge, in Westchester County, New York, then in Herkimer County, New York.

While in Herkimer County, he married Miss Lucy Hult and they would eventually have seven children.
While he continued to work in ministry he and Lucy felt called to venture off into the Mission Field and travel the world evangelizing for Christ.  This would prove to be impossible, however, due to medical complications - his voice failed him - and he was obliged to direct his attention to other pursuits.

He then attended New York Central Medical College (Syracuse campus), becoming a physician in Penn Yan, New York.  Welch then relocated to Winona, Minnesota in 1856 and changed his profession to dentistry.

In 1864, the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church expressly recommended that "in all cases the pure juice of the grape be used in the celebration of the Lord's Supper."  In 1865, Welch relocated to Vineland, New Jersey, where a sister already resided. Then in 1869, Welch discovered a method of pasteurizing grape juice so that fermentation was stopped, and the drink was non-alcoholic. He persuaded local churches to adopt this non-alcoholic "wine" for communion services, calling it "Dr. Welch's Unfermented Wine."

That became the birth of the Welch's Juice Company, what is now a household name.

This is a success story of one man's determination and steadfast devotion to Godly principles.  It also demonstrates how we can't always determine what we'll do in life or where it will take us, but if we remain focused on God at all times, we will inevitably succeed and further the Kingdom of God in the process.

Scripture for Life...02/11/2011

Here is a scripture verse to consider for the weekend.  Of all the ways we have to affect those around us, what we say is perhaps one of the most powerful. We have the ability to lift up others and edify them, or to tear them down and even cause permanent damage - with only our words!

Proverbs 21:23

Scripture for Life...02/09/2011

Our Youth Group meeting was cancelled today due to bad weather, I look forward to meeting with you all again next week.

Next week we will spend some time going over plans for the group, meeting structure, etc., and as part of that we need to put together a calendar for the year, we can post that on the wall in the Youth Basement and it will mirror what's posted on the calendar here on the website.

Instead of our meeting this week, please take a little time to read through this scripture:

Psalm 69:5-6
"You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you.
May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the Lord Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel!"

It would be great if you would take the time to read all of Psalm 69, paying particular attention to the verses above, then consider this question:

Why are you a Christian?

I'm very interested to read any thoughts or comments you have, please post them as a comment to this entry below.

In Christ,
Wes

moment to think on the question and scripture below.  I'd very much

"Angel Flight" music video

Christ calls us to serve others, as we read in Scripture;
Matthew 20:26-28:  "...Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

We should always remember those in our military who selflessly serve all of us, some of them making the ultimate sacrifice in service to others - to us...

This video is dedicated to them and it provides a good opportunity to reflect on the service of the men and women who serve in the military, but also to think on how each of us can be of service to our fellow man, just as we are directed to do by Christ himself.

Scripture for life...

"Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings."

1 Peter 5:5-9 NIV

Giving When it Counts

As told by a hospital nurse...

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease.

Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness.

The doctor explained the situation to her
little brother, and asked the little boy if he would
be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save
her."

As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed
next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing
the color returning to her cheek. Then his face
grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away".

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the
doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his
sister all of his blood in order to save her - meaning that
he would die...

This is a picture of giving - when it counts!
